Running to the Groove

Let there be Rock (and a little bluegrass, dance and other genres)

My brother was a big influence in my music choices from a very early age.  I remember being on our junior school playground arguing who was better, Iron Maiden or Madonna, obviously I was supporting Bruce Dickinson at 7 years old!

This influence in music has lasted throughout my life, I find that some of my brother's recommendations still make it onto my playlists, but I have found my groove as well and there are some tracks that he has started to like from my suggestions, but he won't admit it.

I love to run to music, and feel that it is a real motivator and distraction from the aches.  I always have my phone with me on my runs, so why not use it for music as well?

There are 100's of sites out there offering "The perfect run playlist", but everyone's taste in music is so diverse that the perfect list does not exist.  What I can take from these though is ideas to create my own.  Picking and choosing from 100's of playlists to create the groove I need, the beat that works for me.  The main influence on my playlist is rock and rock variations, but the occasional bluegrass, dance, pop, big band or soundtrack pops up for a little change.

Whilst I am listening to Rock 'n' Roll on my playlist, my run-buddy Rosh listens to indie and chilled out music on his run as he feels that the indie beat is perfect for his feet and groove.  Yet, we run at the same pace and keep each other going through the runs, so it proves that everyone has a playlist in them, but it is completely different.

For me there is nothing more inspirational than when you are reaching the crest of a monstrous gradient and slowly losing feeling in your legs and then the Rocky Training Montage kicks in, see how quickly you get to the top then!

I am not really picky about what I listen to (although I am not a fan of Hip-Hop), anything with the right beat or motivational backing is added to the list, and if it doesn't work whilst out on the road then I can easily skip it and remove later

I have put my running playlist on Spotify as a link on the right hand side of this blog, as I said, this is not the perfect running playlist for anyone but me, but feel free to take some tracks and add to yours, it may be the track that pushes you to the next goal, or it may inspire you to create your own playlist. Why not add some more tracks to my playlist and make it even better, I am always up for suggestions, if you think it fits, add it. or suggest tracks in the comments on this blog.
