Running Training - March

Running Training March

2 months to go till the Half

With only a couple of months till the Half Marathon run in Blackpool, it was time to increase the distances and speed.  We are hoping for a sub 2 hour run, so the training needed pushing.

01/03/2015 - Sunday morning at 8am, Rosh and I were out and rocking.and rolling through the streets of Bolton.  Rosh had not been out for a run since our last joint effort and had been celebrating with his family on several occasions.  Curries, pizzas and beer were on the menu for Rosh the last couple of weeks and he had some serious calories to burn off.  As we approached the 7 mile marker, plodding through country lanes, we were confronted by a monstrous incline, I was feeling great at this point, but the pizza's had taken their toll on Rosh.  A gale force wind and numerous hills had pushed him to the point of no return.  We eventually made it home, 11.7 mile later, and was happy with our effort.

03/03/2015 - Solo run for me and I had the urge to set a PB.  I set off with serious pace and determination.  Strava gave me an update that I had done my first 0.5km in 8 minutes, I knew this was way off the mark but couldn't stop to amend, my GPS had gone mad. Giving me false splits and distances for the full run, I had no idea how far I had come and how fast I was doing it, but I knew I was keeping a decent pace.  When I got home Strava had logged a 27.7km run, which was complete nonsense.  I plotted the route out and was furious to see it was 9.9km and I had done it in 51 mins! No 10k PB for me this time!

05/03/2015 - Determined to get the 10k Personal Best this time, I retraced my steps from the 3rd March's GPS nightmare but added a few extra turns in.  Blessed with a great mix of music from Airbourne to Muse to Kenny Loggins, I ploughed through the miles with power and determination. When I got home I was amazed with the results, a fastest 5k and 10k PB were attained and I still felt great.

Shap Wells memory loss - I plotted a route ready for our weekend away in Shap, packed various running clothes as the Lake District has a habit of being variable weather, and packed all my electronic equipment, what I did forget to do though was pack my running shoes.  The thought of doing a 10k in flip flops or walking boots did not fill me full of confidence so I decided to chill out instead (I am sure Clare was much happier with this option that losing me for an hour)

10/03/2015 - Rosh still suffering from the longest bout of man flu, we set off on a reverse route of my 10k's from the last couple of days.  Rosh is struggling with his breathing at the moment, and en route I told him it was time to increase the drugs from Paracetamol to more dedicated Man Flu tablets. Hopefully he will be functioning at 100% for our next run

12/03/2015 -  Repeating the run from the 10th, I went on for my solo Thursday Run as Rosh was celebrating again.  His new-born nephew has had more parties in his first month than I have had in 35 years, but still, I can't blame him!

15/03/2015 - Going back to my old faithful GPS issue run, I went out with absolute determination.  Sunday Afternoon, I whacked the music on full pelt, took notifications off Strava and just went with the flow.  The music was brilliant all the way round and the conditions must have been perfect.  I got back and realised that I had set a couple of new records with serious improvements.  I don't think I will be repeating these speeds, but happy that I have them under my belt now

16/03/2015 - I had not done a long run for a couple of weeks, so decided that an 11 miler was due.  With my big hill to climb for the first two miles and then a good 2 mile downhill I was onto a winner.  When I turned at the 6 mile marker and started a steady climb back home I realised that my legs had started to ache.  Luckily, "There's No Easy Way Out" (from Rocky IV) came on the music player and I found the energy that had been hiding away.  Pushing on for another 2 mile climb and then onto my final descent I made it home just 3 minutes after my intended goal.  Not bad for a solo run.  Rosh is still suffering from Man Flu, but is promising to come out with me again soon.

19/03/2015 - My running plan had decided to throw a gentle 5k run in to the middle of the week, I think just to keep the legs moving, there must be some kind of science behind it, but I do as I am told. Off I pattered for an easy run, but challenged myself to a monster hill to finish.

21/03/2015 - Whilst the car was in for it's 2nd annual service, I was wondering how I could spend the 4 hours waiting time.  The options were to sit in the waiting room watching Jeremy Kyle with the other abandoned drivers, go and have a mooch round the Middlebrook retail park and look at pointless items, or go for a little run.  Obviously I went for the latter to start with.  The run I had planned was only a 7 miler, but when I got to the bottom of Blackrod I thought I would give the big old hill a go adding 2 miles on to the run.  Admittedly, when I returned and the car still wasn't serviced I resorted to a mooch round and then 40 minutes of Chav TV

24/03/2015 - Starting from our Slimming World meeting point as I was eager to see Clare hit her goal and a 3 stone loss, I tottered off up New Brook Road, into Little Hulton and back through Tyldesley to home.  Someone seems to have taken down all the GPS satellites at the moment as I am getting very little signal, but as I had plotted the route out earlier and wasn't going to set any records, I just put the music on tootled on.  Definitely noticed that Spring is in the air as it wasn't pitch black for the first part of my run

26/03/2015 - My running plan again suggested a 5k run mid week.  Based on the previous weeks mud fest mid route I opted for a more road based run, to make things more interesting though I spent a couple of days plotting the route meticulously, writing the turning points on a post it note and followed the route to the letter.  So was born the "Draw Something" GPS challenge and the Dog Route.

28/03/2015 - Whilst in Talacre for the weekend, I thought I would take advantage of the coastal winds and go for an 8 miler through Talacre, Prestatyn and back.  Great route, but with my headphones breaking, forgetting my hat and battery not charging on my phone I was not off to a good start, but once I was out running the long coastal paths and golf courses, it didn't matter.

I planned to finish the month with a long 12 mile run to push my total milage for March to 100, but biblical rain and Armageddon hit Bolton, so I opted for the safer option of cooking a roast and staying at home.
