And so it begins
I am using the My Asics training plan to help prepare for my little 26 and a bit mile run scheduled for February 2016. I used the same application for the Blackpool Half Marathon and it predicted I should complete the run in 1 hour 50 minutes, I did it in 1 hour 49 so I think it works pretty well for me.
I have also decided that after a few weeks of gentle 5k's and very little hills that I will return back to basics and run at the paces suggested by the My Asics Calendar.
Each month I will post the schedule on the blog and then update the post as my runs are completed. This will be a way of tracking how I felt after each run, and also keep me in check to make sure I am doing the runs. I may not do them on the exact days, but I intend to follow the plan as closely as possible.
So for June....
This is the "Pre-conditioning" phase of the training. The Pre-Conditioning Phase is an important one to get your body ready to train for the Marathon distance. There is lots of jogging in this phase so enjoy this pace and don't be tempted to speed up, you will have plenty time later to train harder.

June 9th - Setting off a day earlier than planned, I went out for a gentle 3 miles and was joined by Rosh. Since his Blackpool Half completion, Rosh has been suffering with serious knee and calf issues so is currently wearing leg braces whilst running. It was like going out with a brown Forrest Gump. With a pace of 9:30 min miles I felt very fresh when arriving back home and thinking already that I may have to up the ante, but we will wait and see after Friday's longer run
Distance: 3.4 mile Time: 33:16 Pace: 9:37/mi
June 12th - I finished work early ready for a weekend in Talacre for my mother-in-law's 60th Birthday. Knowing there would be a few beers involved and some naughty food, I went out for a pre-party plod. As the plan stated, a gentle 5.5 miler keeping a good pace. Trying to stay away from the main roads, I found a lovely little countryside-esque run nearby. Gentle enough to start with, however, I did feel my legs tiring towards the end.
Distance: 5.1 mile Time: 44:58 Pace: 8:49/mi
June 14th - After returning from a night of copious amounts of beer and pub food, the next planned run was more important. I opted to jump ahead a week and try the build-up variance run. Starting with a 9:30 gentle pace and knocking 10 seconds off each mile, finally finishing with a 1 mile fast pace (7:25/mi). I returned feeling great from this run, I am looking forward to repeating this again
Distance: 5.6 mile Time: 49:59 Distance: 8:52/mi
June 17th - Feeling pretty confident after the build-up run, I plodded off around my home town, taking in the sights and sounds on offer, through my old estate and back towards home. My goal was to stay around the same comfortable pace for the whole 5.5mile run with little variation. I felt strong throughout the whole journey, happy to take on slight inclines and finished at the same pace as I started
Distance: 5.5 mile Time: 48:36 Pace: 8:44/mi
June 21st - Whilst on holiday in Maiori (Italy), I thought there would be no better place to go for a little 5k run than the famous Amalfi Coastline. My run would take me down from our hotel (La Dolce Vita) into the town of Maiori and though to the neighbouring town of Minori. The coastline is that spectacular, I just kept saying "I'll just carry on to the next corner", eventually I had to convince myself to turn back as I could have just carried on. Very hilly but really picturesque. Probably the most beautiful run I have ever done.
Distance: 6.2 mile Time: 58:23 Pace: 9:21/mi
June 24th - After far too much Pizza, wine, beer, amaro and Ice Cream (when in Italy, why not?) I needed to go for a little calorie burn run. I opted for the gentle run down Lungo Mare, one long pedestrianised area than runs parallel to the shore. Fantastic run, was paused in the middle as I saw my cousin's and stopped for a chat, but was straight back on it moments later.
Distance: 3 mile Time: 26.19 Pace: 8:37/mi
June 29th - My first day back in work after our little trip to Italy saw me only able to go out for a run later than usual in the evening. So at 8:30pm I set off. I asked Clare if I should just go for a gentle 5 miler round the town or go up the 2 mile hill to the top of Newbrook Road and down the A6 to loop back, I think Clare was feeling a little evil! Repeating the build up run knocking 10 seconds off each mile I felt great, starting at a steady 9 minute mile and reducing to 8 minutes (or less)
Distance: 5.5 mile Time: 47:17 Pace: 8:34/mi
Total Distance June: 40.5 mile (Planned 47)
Total Time: 5 hours 12 mins
Average Pace: 9 min/mi
Furthest Distance: 6.2 mile
Distance: 3.4 mile Time: 33:16 Pace: 9:37/mi
