Taper Month
After completing the Blackpool Half, Clare had paid for a professional sports massage at Robin Park, Wigan. I hobbled into the treatment room with aches and pains I never though possible and left skipping down the car park as if I had a new pair of legs. I will definitely be using these guys again after any future events.
3rd May - Instructed to do a taper run by my online run coach, I took my running shoes and gear away with us for the Bank Holiday Weekend on our trip to Withensea. On the morning of the run, the heavens opened to what can only be described as biblical rain, so I reluctantly opted for an indoor treadmill run. I have always been dismissive of treadmills in gym stating that they make running far too easy as pace can be set at the touch of a button, they lack atmosphere and environment as you are looking at the same 4 walls and are completely dull. I stand by this feeling as it was dull, boring and far too easy.
4th May - After the boring treadmill run the day before, my legs were yearning for a decent outdoor run and with the weather looking better, I opted for a Rocky style beach run along the rocky shore of Withensea. Great to be back outside, although I was still on taper so had to take it fairly easy.
7th May - Thankfully the weather seemed to be holding off, so I went out for a little 4 miler to keep the legs moving. Around Atherton and through the fields back to home. Whilst yomping through the fields I decided to take a little short cut, this is where I found the deepest puddle in the North West and whilst trying to clear it gazelle style, I plunged right in the centre of it and got stuck up to my knees in smelly, boggy, manure filled mud. May I say the last mile home was a lot slower and an outdoor hosing was due.
12th May - After the Blackpool Half Marathon, Rosh had declared he hated running and was retiring. Thankfully, this was just due to his cut knees on the day and he was back on the road with me. Taking it nice and steady we retraced his old high school cross country routes and claimed a nice little 5 mile victory
17th May - Deciding on an alternate climate, I ventured out for an evening run in Makadi, Egypt. The temperature had been ranging around the 40 degree mark all day, so I waited till early evening before going out. The temperature had changed very little and I was dripping with sweat by my first mile loop. I continued on though, chasing camels for sneaky selfies.
20th May - I love taking my GPS tracking devices on holiday and running alternate routes to the standard home runs. Nothing will top the run on the 20th May 2015. Whilst aboard the Grand Rose Cruise Ship sailing down the River Nile, I jumped on the treadmill, which was situated on the top Sun Deck with a full view of either bank and ran. Luckily the Grand Rose was doing a steady 9:30 minute mile pace, so I set the treadmill to match. As I previously mentioned from my run on the 3rd May, I hate treadmill running, but on this occasion I can honestly say, it was awesome. So for me to enjoy a future treadmill run, I would need a cruise ship, awesome vista's and a beautiful breeze, until then, I stand by my thoughts on treadmills.
25th May - Back in Makadi, I took to my familiar loop run, although this time I ran up and down the pier outside the Grand Makadi hotel. There were no camels to be seen this time, however the colour of the sea and fluttering fish were glorious enough to take me away from the pounding heat for just a few moments
26th May - I had opted for an early morning run as the evening runs were proving fairly hot endeavours. Unfortunately, I had a little touch of the deli belly and had to cut the run short before I got caught short. On the 26th May, we found out the day after, Hurghada was officially the hottest place on the planet at 54 degrees.
27th May - Changing my route a little, I decided to run out from the Makadi Mega Complex and head into the desert. The road changed from tarmac to gravel to sand to desert fairly quickly, and when I started to see vultures flying above, I knew it was time to turn back and head to civilisation again
28th May - My last run in Makadi, I decided to return to the Makadi loop run, taking in the pier and extending it a little as I was feeling great. The temperature was still in the 40's and I was dripping with sweat at the end of the run, but a well deserved, ice cold beer was a perfect finish.
