Running Superstitions and the quirky things we do!
Runners are a quirky bunch of people, from wearing the same socks on a run, only doing short runs if a lone magpie has been seen, eating the same food before an event, lucky headbands, listening to "Rocky Training Montages" before a run etc, but if it means we survive this treacherous activity and can push on to the next then these superstitions will continue.
A good friend of mine, many moons ago, told me of her superstition of stepping on "Two Grids" and "Three Grids" and to this day whilst I am out for a run of any distance I avoid the "Three Grids" like the plague....
Let me explain more.....
Lucky Grids |
Along the pavements in the UK there are covers to prevent people from falling down gaping holes. These vary in size from 1 cover to 3 covers. I was told by my friend Manda that the 2 grid variant bring you luck whilst their three grid size cousins are the harbinger of doom and should be avoided at all costs, or bad luck shall be imposed. Whilst this is a childlike superstition with no grounds of proof, I still purposefully run through bushes, onto the road, balancing along slight gaps to refrain from stepping foot on the deadly 3 grids. On the flip side, I purposefully seek out the lucky counterparts and feel that it gives me a little power boost every time I step a foot on one. Believe me, if you haven't noticed these on your runs prior to this, after reading this you will start to understand the difficulty of avoidance with the abundance of 3 grids out there.
This may sound a little crazy to most, but I am sure some runners can understand the torture I go through on a run with my silly superstition. I can't be the only one!
Please put my mind at rest and let me know your superstitions before a race, event or just a general run.
